The Big G Is Back

The Big G is heading back to Hollywood. According to Variety, Legendary Pictures has announced that it has acquired the rights from Toho Co. to make a Godzilla movie. They are co-producing and co-financing with Warner Brothers.

Everyone is thinking about G'85 and the huge stink pile that was. I'm going to take the high road on this one and hope for the best. Legendary Pictures has been involved in The Dark Knight, Watchmen, and Where the Wild Things Are to name a few. Plus the chairman and CEO has been quoted:

"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."

I hope he delivers.

So much I want to say about this. I guess I'll need to post an article. Unlike the crapfest that was the Emmerich/Devlin Godzilla I'm not looking forward to this. Hollywood just doesn't have a clue how to do a kaiju movie. Cloverfield was an interesting take on the genre, but it misses the mark. A good kaiju movie has to have characters you care about, not characters you want the kaiju to stomp on.

Well, maybe that was the point of Cloverfield.

I just have no faith in anybody in Hollywood getting it right. And reading the Hollywood Reporter press release pretty much confirms to me that they don't get the appeal of Godzilla. Godzilla is just a marketing angle to make piles of cash to these people.

Prove me wrong.

Amen! Hollywood knows for horror/Zombie movies where the irritating teen gits eventually take a dirtnap due to their stupidity.

I've lost faith in Hollyweird completely -- what's that I heard the other day? There are 75 Movie and TV remakes in the works -- 75!

I'll take the new CGI/Classic Anime remakes because they're about all that's left that I'm remotely interested it. I seriously get more out of watching TCM and digging around for lost "classics" from the B-movie genre or Yore...

Other than the Yamato movie and now the Godzilla flick, I quit letting my hopes get out of hand for these types of movies. The plot behind the new G movie should have the big guy come over and completely destroy Hollywood. He can take out Disneyland as an appetizer. I'd pay to see that.
