Navarre Corporation today announced that it has sold FUNimation Entertainment for $24 million in an all cash transaction. Purchasers in the transaction are a group of entities that were newly formed by an investment group that includes Gen Fukunaga, FUNimation Entertainment's chief executive officer, as a minority stakeholder. In connection with the sale, the Company has entered into an agreement to act as FUNimation Entertainment's exclusive distributor in the United States on a continuing basis, and will also act as FUNimation Entertainment's logistics and fulfillment services provider.

"David Ellison's Skydance Productions is negotiating a rights deal to turn the 1970s animated science fiction TV series Star Blazers into a large scale live action feature. Ellison will hire Christopher McQuarrie to write the script, with Ellison and Josh C. Kline producing with McQuarrie. The series was based on the Japanese anime series Space Battleship Yamato. Both are described as "space opera," involving alien invasions, the near extinction of the human race, and a last dash journey through space to save the planet...
"Ellison made a deal with Paramount Pictures in late 2009 to co-finance four to six pictures per year, and then raised a reported $350 million in debt and equity funding. His Paramount deal has gotten off to a flying start: Skydance funded half of True Grit, the $30 million Joel and Ethan Coen-directed Western that is up for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture...

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, the Broadway musical starring Marvel's web-slinging superhero, debuts January 11. The show, which at $60M is the most expensive play ever staged in New York, features a score composed by Bono and the Edge of U2.

The Big G Is Back
The Big G is heading back to Hollywood. According to Variety, Legendary Pictures has announced that it has acquired the rights from Toho Co. to make a Godzilla movie. They are co-producing and co-financing with Warner Brothers.
Everyone is thinking about G'85 and the huge stink pile that was. I'm going to take the high road on this one and hope for the best. Legendary Pictures has been involved in The Dark Knight, Watchmen, and Where the Wild Things Are to name a few. Plus the chairman and CEO has been quoted:
"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."
I hope he delivers.
