Last I heard Tobey's Robotech is dead in the water. But it's Hollweird, mang, things happen!
It's a cycle. Every so many years they start talking about doing some new series or a movie or a video game. I'm sure they'll keep coming back to the whole, "let's make a live action movie," thing over and over again. Just like they do with the Evangelion live action movie thing.
The problem is neither Evangelion or Robotech really cracked the mainstream. Is there really that many people demanding a live action Robotech movie? I doubt it.
The idea of a live action/CGI Voltron has some legs to it, probably more than Robotech due to the whole Big West/Harmony Gold loggerheads. I'm just worried that taking either of these in too much of a "dark/serious/adult" direction will play havoc with the original source material.
Evangelion as a live action would be pretty hard to swallow imho. It's a hard cartoon to get your head around in the first place.
I've never been a big fan of Evangelion. I just don't think it's as good as the hype. I suppose seeing all those really bad Evangelion AMVs poisoned the well for me.
Whatta you mean? The whole Sentinels thing was a joy killing load of grim/serious crap. They had to focus on the weakest and least interesting plot hole. And only because that's the part they made/copyrighted to tie all the crap together. Fun never entered in to that equation.

The Sentinels novels were, I totally agree. By 'original source material' I'm talking about the Japanese originals; if they were able to stay fairly close to this a Live Actioner would be a slam-dunk with today's CGI.
Even still I expect to see more versions spun off of Mospeada and Macross -- in Japan. Southern Cross was a concept that didn't translate as well from origins to development to the final cartoon, and then it really lost whatever unique spark it had in becoming a part of Robotech. And on the other hands, the Robotech re-versioning of SC added new life to a failed cartoon, so who's to say that that Japanese don't see licensing and remakes and what-not happening ever for that?
[Robotech as franchise/Sentinels]

On the one hand, Robotech in America is almost 100% Macross-derivative and comic-book based at this point (don't even get me started on its failed success as a franchise). On the other hand, I'm pretty damn sure there are filk-songs that do justice to the Saga of lame franchise development a la Robotech...
