Comics - News - Live-action 'Akira' gets fast-tracked - Digital Spy

“Akira happens to be something that Warner Brothers management loves. They see value in the franchise,” Lanzar told Collider.

Proof positive that Warner Brothers Management has their collective heads still too far up their own asses.

Seriously. AKIRA is over 20 years old. The boat on this has sailed long ago. Nobody cares or wants a live action AKIRA movie. It's over and done. Move on to something new.

It took the suits over 20 years to get their head around this. Now they're going to try and make it a hit. Anything Hollywood touches I have no hope for. If it is "good", then bonus. I'm not optimistic about any of these titles (Battle Angel Alita, etc.).

What it is is that the Gen X fanboys are now the suits in charge at the dream factory. So all the shit that they were watching/reading/consuming when they were kids is being turned in to big budget wank material. Just like that fuckwit who had to make a big budget Watchmen movie even though Watchmen was never mainstream.

AKIRA was never mainstream. The made one print of the dubbed movie and drove it from art house movie theater to art house movie theater. It wasn't a big hit. The Marvel published books weren't a huge hit, either. Why they wanna make a big budget summer tent pole movie out of the damn thing is a mystery to me. But I can see the fanboys who'd be all over this shit.

And honestly, AKIRA taken out of the 80s isn't AKIRA any more. Without the cold war politics and the threat of Nuclear destruction it's limp.

Agreed.

Making a live action movie would also serve to -somewhat- diminish the technical achievement of the animated film.

And... "franchise"? Please, the last thing anyone wants to see is three iterations of AKIRA.

"AKIRA: The Phantom Menace", anyone?

What Toho said. We've gone from Baby Boomer nostalgia to Gen X nostalgia. Since the X'ers are now middle age and running these operations, expect even more of this crap.

It makes you wonder what'll happen when the Millennials take over the madhouse. They'll be movies based on iPods and iPhones?

Hanna Montana has kids of her own and helps them become the new gen teen idols of their time. The cycle never ends.

Quick, get that into development!

Bieber and the Jonas Brothers will make guest appearances. By this point, their lives will be so screwed up they will have made Gary Coleman's life look like a huge success. They will go through a 12 Step program and/or become Scientologists which will become the official religion of Hollywood. They will spread the word on this new show.
