Brattle Anime Festival in Cambridge

On Saturday February 25, the Brattle theater in Cambridge, MA will hold an 18 hour anime festival. Starting at 6pm the Brattle will show anime such as Evangelion episodes 21-24; Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer; Azumanga Daioh!; Samurai X and more. Details are available here.

Zeta III Premiere with Yoshiyuki Tomino and Gackt

Yoshiyuki Tomino and Gackt are scheduled to appear at the premiere of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation III -Love is the Pulse of the Stars- on February 23 at Yurakuchou Marion Asashi Hall. USA Today Booklist Top 150

USA Today has released the Booklist Top 150 books for the week ending January 22. Tokyopop's Kingdom Hearts almost broke into the top 100 this week, at position 108, up from 187 last week. Viz's Fullmetal Alchemist enjoyed a second week in the top 150 at position 111, down from 94 last week. No other manga were present in the list.

Tokyopop Lay Offs

Tokyopop has laid off a number of employees, including Steve Kleckner, VP of sales. Other people laid off include the senior editor in charge of OEL titles, two managers, a copy-editor and a senior designer. In total, six people are confirmed to have been laid off.
Seven Seas to Release New Speed Racer Comic

Seven Seas has announced that it will release a 5-part Speed Racer mini-series starting in July 2006. Each issue will be 32 pages, full color. The author and artist have not yet been announced.

With a name derived from the infamous Kenkanryu, Ohta Books has published Ken Otaku Ryu, "Hating the Otaku Wave." Unlike Kenkanryu, Ken Otaku Ryu is not a manga; the 224 page book vilifies otaku and is a counter-piece to the recent positive press that otaku culture has received from Japanese and international media. Among other things, the book focuses on and attacks moe and lolicon interests and states that otaku discriminate against women.

Patlabor Movie 1 DVD Release Announced

Although the date and the contents have long been known, Bandai Visual has now solicited their regular and limited edition releases of Patlabor 1: The Movie . The regular edition carries a suggested retail price of $29.99, and the limited edition carries an SRP of $89.99. Both DVDs will be released on April 25. Source: TRSI

Priest Live-Action Movie

Gamers Ikebukuro Closing -nyo

Broccoli has announced that it is temporarily closing its Gamers store in Ikebukuro after 9 years of operation. The store was closed effective January 15; no date has been announced for a re-opening. A "Limited Edition - Closing Memorial" phone card illustrated by Koge Donbo was sold for 1200 yen. Broccoli suffered a 903 million yen deficit in 2005, compared to 20 million yen of expected positive cash flow.

For the week ending January 8, Samurai Champloo volume six and volume seven took the top two positions in Nielsen Vidscan's anime chart. The previous week's top anime DVD, InuYasha the Movie 3: Swords of an Honorable Ruler, fell to fourth position behind Fullmetal Alchemist volume 7.
