Dirty Cartoon Dilemma

Not sure what this will mean, though I doubt much will change after so long.

What ever happened to that American guy who got busted for getting Hentai through the mail? Did it go to trial?

He pleaded guilty in May of 2009 and was just sentenced on the 11th of February. He got 6 months in jail followed by three years supervised release and 5 years probation to be served concurrently. Also, from ANN, he has to "participate in a treatment program, to include psychological testing and a polygraph examination, as directed by the U. S. Probation Officer." According to earlier court documents, this last provision is "intended to provide [Handley] with diagnosis and treatment for sexually and/or gender identity or other mental health issues."

Check out the article on Anime News Network. They did a good job of covering it. I'm going to call the link "NSFW". There are a couple of blurred photos of covers for the manga he was busted for.

@Bomb -- thanks for the link.

On the one hand Handley isn't much different than a lot of the AmeriOtaku(TM) we've run into over the years. On the other, the mind reels at how his being caught could lead to similar crackdowns in years to come.

I'm not saying that the guy didn't, perhaps, need some help, either: bouncing around from studies of the Christian Bible and fictitious, visual depictions of sexual acts between children and animals. Hell, I'd willingly seek treatment myself if anyone so much as caught me with that kind of material!

ANN has posted editorials from Charles Brownstein (Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Executive Director), Carl Horn (Dark Horse Comics editor), and Jason Thompson (Manga: The Complete Guide author) on the Handley case.

Carl makes some good points.

Seriously. What a waste of court resources, time and money.
