Mars Needs Euthanasia

Did anybody see Mars Needs Moms besides me? Sweet suffering Hayley Mills, what a disaster. Here's Zemeckis' formula for kid-movie success: first, make a movie for kids that's about a kid who's mom is abducted, sedated, and subjected to torturous experiments by aliens -- because, you know, kids are totally secure and could never be scared by the thought of their mother being kidnapped by monsters. Second, people the story with completely unlikeable characters -- a spoiled, asshole tweener "hero" whom you'll have an instant urge to slap stupid; the whining, nagging helicopter mom-slash-victim; a sweaty fat guy with Asperger's as a "good guy"; and a planet full of dirty, dangerous-looking Afro-Rastafarian Martians. Third, create a plot so convoluted and incomprehensible that Thomas fucking Pynchon couldn't figure it out. And finally, "animate" it using that creepy mo-cap process that makes every face look like that of a soulless, reanimated corpse (no pun intended). Put it all together and you get the biggest box office bomb in the history of movies. GG Disney!

This movie isn't just bad -- it's literally so bad it's scary. The characters' horrible, dead-eyed faces, the scenes of the kid's unconscious mom being brain-drained by aliens, the aforementioned sweaty fat guy with Asperger's -- it's pure nightmare fuel. My normally-unflappable four-year-old boy held my hand in a death-grip of terror the entire time we were in front of the screen; after about twenty minutes, I asked him if he wanted to leave, and he was more than ready. "Too scary, Papa." Yeah, that's what I like to hear after spending $26 on tickets and popcorn! GG Zemeckis!

Showbiz is so effed. Hollywood (etc.) is full of hyper-talented, hyper-creative types who could make the world happy with their films and so forth, yet who toil away for years in go-nowhere jobs on the cubicle floors until they give up on the dream. Meanwhile, two floors up on the Executive Level, there are other people who are getting paid fortunes to make big decisions, yet who are completely incompetent to make those decisions. And yet they get paid anyway! Think about it: the Mouse dropped a cool hundred  and fifty million bucks on this sinker. That's one hundred and fifty million buckadingdongs. It'll earn back maybe -- maybe! -- a tenth of that. Yet some guy in a suit who makes more in a year than I'll net in my entire lifetime signed off on it -- and they'll keep paying him that fortune even though he was wrong, wrong, wrong.

Now you tell me there's any justice in this world.

Oh, well, at least they shuttered Zemeckis' "animation" studio for good. Thanks for wasting my money and scaring my kid shitless, Disney! WTG!

Skydance Targets 'Star Blazers'

Mike Fleming, Deadline.com, Monday February 21, 2011 @ 1:26pm
"David Ellison's Skydance Productions is negotiating a rights deal to turn the 1970s animated science fiction TV series Star Blazers into a large scale live action feature. Ellison will hire Christopher McQuarrie to write the script, with Ellison and Josh C. Kline producing with McQuarrie. The series was based on the Japanese anime series Space Battleship Yamato. Both are described as "space opera," involving alien invasions, the near extinction of the human race, and a last dash journey through space to save the planet...

"Ellison made a deal with Paramount Pictures in late 2009 to co-finance four to six pictures per year, and then raised a reported $350 million in debt and equity funding. His Paramount deal has gotten off to a flying start: Skydance funded half of True Grit, the $30 million Joel and Ethan Coen-directed Western that is up for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture...

"Ellison is the son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison..."

Totoro Forest Project

"The Totoro Forest Project is a fundraising exhibition/auction to support the non-profit organization, 'Totoro No Furusato National Fund', Oscar winning filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki has been one of the big supporters of. The event will feature more than 200 pieces of original art especially created by internationally acclaimed artists in the fields of animation, comic books, illustration, and fine arts. Hayao Miyazaki has been actively supporting the preservation effort of Sayama Forest for more than ten years. This 8750 acre park in the outskirts of Tokyo is also known as Totoro Forest. It's in these woods in fact that the concept for the film My Neighbor Totoro was born.

"In the past few decades, the forest has been subject to urban development. Only continued support to the Totoro Trust Fund can help preserve this much needed island of green in the midst of Tokyo's urban sprawl. We intend to donate the entire proceeds of the project to this worthy cause.

"This event can also be a symbolic gesture, sending a strong message to the world in terms of environmental and social awareness.  Imagine artists from all over the world coming together to donate artwork to help conserve a forest they have never seen."

Sucker Punch

This one has zepplins, dragons, and samurai. Should be double billed with Iron Sky.

Gamera: The Giant Monster SE

Airbender Trailer & Akira News

This is based off the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon. I have to admit to not seeing any of the original, but the live action theatrical trailer doesn't look too bad. Heavy on the action and special effects, but it has to be better than Dragonball Evolution.

And a live action Akira isn't off the table. New York Magazine's Vulture Blog reports that the The Hughes Bros. (Menace to Society II, Dead Presidents, Book of Eli) are talking with Warner Bros. about using the script by the same writing duo that brought you Iron Man. Instead of trying to cram six manga worth of story into two hours of movie, two movies would be made.

Plain and simple, I just don't expect great things from Hollywood anymore. This is no different.

Here's Nova . . .

Meisa Kuroki is going to play Yuki Mori (a.k.a. Nova in StarBlazers) in the new Yamato movie. Looks like she has taken on plenty of roles with ties to anime and manga:

-She was Sister Angela in the TV adaptation of 1 Pound no Fukuin (One Pound Gospel) based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi.
-She played Miyamoto Subaru, the lead character in the movie Dance, Subaru! based off the manga from Masahito Soda.
-She was the voice for Vexille in the CG animated film of the same name.
-She was the character Grey in Mamuro Oshii's Assault Girls from last year.
-And for the Takashi Miike fans, she was Ruka Aizawa in '07's Crow Zero.

Here she is huckin' something called Cola Shock:

Here's her singing side being a "Bad Girl" (Might be a bit NSFW):

I think she'll make a fine Yuki/Nova.

Live Action Yamato Trailer

Kick ass. This is looking good.
